At the ruins of the Great Temple in the Aztec capital of Tenochtitlan there is a stone wall that from a distance, may appear to be just another part of the ancient site.  If you take some steps closer and scrutinize the structure, you will be greeted by hundreds of skulls.  Standing in front of this skull rack, the tzomplantli will display the social purposes for this civilization: the sacrificial victims, to honor the gods to whom the victims were sacrificed  and to showcase the military might  and power of the emperor and empire.
