Every year during the Cinco de Mayo festival, the citizens of Puebla, Mexico, come together to commemorate the Battle of Puebla in a lively re-enactment. Dressed in 19th-century attire, participants wield machetes and vintage rifles, bringing history to life.
Those portraying the French soldier don knapsacks with the wine bottles protruding, while some for the striking blue-and-red Zouave uniform, reminiscent of the French infantry of that era. In addition, women dress in long skirts and flowery hats represent the soldaderas, or "female fighters" that cooked and cared for the Mexican army.
The air is filled with the crackle of rifle shots and the boom of cannon blasts as the mock battle unfolds, culminating in a dramatic sword fight between the Mexican and French generals. Naturally, the Mexican general emerges triumphant in this symbolic showdown. Beyond Mexico, the Battle of Puebla is also re-enacted in various parts of the United States, such as San Diego's Old Town and Heritage Park in California.
